DIE FLEDERMAUS
from JOHANN STRAUSS II
AGASSIZ THEATRE | Cambridge, MA | January 2018
A co-production with Harvard College Opera, this irreverent and hysterical reinterpretation of Strauss' comic masterpiece DIE FLEDERMAUS is an experiment in madness, disorder, and extravagance. The production appears, at first, to be set in an unremarkable contemporary office space, but when it is revealed that the lead baritone, Gabriel von Eisenstein, has been quarantined with mumps, chaos ensues. As the narrative spirals further and further out of control the banal setting begins to crumble, making way for increasingly elaborate and unexpected theatrical explorations from ballet-dancing dinosaurs to S.W.A.T. chickens drunk on champagne.
